Introductory Comments

150 regulators, scientists and industry representatives met on 5-6 February 1997, in New-Delhi, to discuss issues related to the benefits, safety, approval and use of low-calorie sweeteners in foods and beverages. The sponsors of the seminar were the International Sweeteners Association (ISA) and the Confederation of Indian Food Trade and Industry (CIFTI). International experts presented the results of latest scientific findings. Participants discussed the role and benefits of sweeteners in foods for consumers who wish to reduce their energy intake for weight control purposes or need to control their sugar intake for metabolic reasons.
